Volunteers

Volunteers

Sometimes more junior expatriate medical workers are seeking a time of overseas placement and approach the hospital. Being a busy teaching hospital, we have limited space for such volunteers.

Providing undergraduate medical students with such placements is the first priority for the hospital, but occasionally it is possible to have other volunteers with us.

Usually such a placement should be of benefit to both the hospital and the volunteer.

Whether or not your request for such a placement is successful depends on many things: your skills/level of training; programme for other visitors; level of supervision available for you at that time; availability of accommodation, etc.

Volunteers are usually fully self funding, and are accommodated in the guest house.

Qualified doctors considering working longer term overseas are usually given priority. Often such doctors are housed in one of the staff accommodation units. A minimum period of 3 months is suggested to allow for adjustment to the practice of medicine in Uganda.

If interested please contact either the visitors coordinator (who coordinates the student elective programme) visitors@kiwokohospital.org or medical superintendent (for post qualified medical volunteers) medsup@kiwokohospital.org

There is no expectation for visiting doctors to bring any donations, but some may be able to assist the hospital by bringing some much needed medical supplies. One particularly useful source of drugs packaged and prepared with paperwork which is legitimate and legally robust is from  donated drugs in partnership with IHPUK (http://www.ihpuk.org/our-programmes/doctors-travel-packs). IHP are a highly professional organisation, and although some costs are connected with this programme, the value of drugs is far in excess of such costs.
